How Scribe Setu works
A scribe (also called a writer or amanuensis) reads the question paper aloud and writes the answers dictated by a blind or visually impaired student. Scribe Setu helps students find a trusted volunteer for this role.
For students
- Register with your basic details. You can ask a friend, family member or your institution to help.
- Request a scribe: exam name, date, time, centre, language and any rules about the scribe's qualification.
- Review offers: volunteers who match will offer to help. You see their name, verified status, languages, qualification and experience.
- Confirm one volunteer. Contact details and the exam-centre address are then shared, and you can chat privately inside the site.
- After the exam, confirm it was completed and share quick feedback.
For volunteers
- Register and tell us your languages, qualification, subjects and available days.
- Get verified by uploading an ID. Only the admin team can view it.
- Find requests that match you. We automatically hide requests that clash with your schedule or do not fit the student's rules.
- Offer to help and wait for the student's confirmation.
- Earn recognition: build your impact record and download a certificate.
For organizations
NGOs, blind associations, schools and colleges can register once and request scribes on behalf of many students. This is the fastest way to help students who find it hard to use the internet on their own.
Urgent requests
If an exam is within 48 hours, the request is marked Urgent, nearby volunteers are notified straight away and the admin team is alerted so they can arrange help manually.
How matching works
We use simple, transparent rules, not a black box. A volunteer is shown a request only if they:
- read and write the exam language,
- meet the qualification range the student specified (many exams need the scribe to be one level below the student),
- live in the same state and are free on that weekday and date,
- do not have another confirmed exam at the same time.
Matches are then ranked by distance (PIN code and city), subject comfort, experience and verified status.
Please remember
Exam boards and universities have their own rules for scribes. Always confirm the rules for your exam with the exam authority; Scribe Setu connects people but does not replace official permission. Read our safety guidelines.
